Dr. Jonathan J Bruno

I went into labor April 1st and delivered April 2nd, shortly after shift change at Memorial Hospital. My OB does not work weekends, and Dr. Bruno was working as part of the Hospitalist program. When he walked in sometime after 7 to introduce his self, I was not impressed. I’m sure coming in on the tail end of labor can be stressful, but he didn’t seem very confident or informed. He certainly didn’t make me feel comfortable in the slightest, as he had terrible bedside manner as well. My daughter became stuck during pushing due to a shoulder dystocia, so it was a very high stress situation for everyone. I was basically being threatened to push, which wasn’t helping anyone. Instead of any encouragement, I was made to feel that my best wasn’t good enough. He genuinely looked terrified. I understand that the situation was life or death for my daughter, but part of being a doctor is dealing with these situations well. She was delivered with assistance from the vacuum and ended up with a broken clavicle as well. I was not able to have an epidural, which he should have known. I also would like to add this was my first child. When stitching up my second degree tear, he didn’t initially offer me any lidocaine until he looked up and could see I was in pain. Like I said, this was my first birth. I didn’t even know that was a thing. During this, my husband is also reeling from my traumatic birth when Dr. Bruno calls him over to look at the labial tear I also had to try to instruct my husband on how to care for it. Very strange and in appropriate given the circumstances. My daughter is being worked on, we are all crying, and he just keeps talking to fill the silence. It was highly inappropriate, and my mother in law actually had to tell him to stop talking. I was told of my daughters complications and told I would be updated as soon as possible when they took her to the nursery, then the nicu… and instead of leaving it to the pediatrician, pediatric nurses, nicu staff, etc to evaluate her, he takes it upon himself to tell me how she could have nerve damage, may not be able to use her arm, and just keeps going. He just doesn’t know when to stop talking. In the months since my daughters birth, I have since learned that there are various maneuvers and pushing positions to help deliver a baby with shoulder dystocia.
