About John Martin Stern
Reviews for John Martin Stern
Dr. Stern is a knowledgeable and sensitive specialist, one of the best in his team of neurologists. I have been working with him at UCLA as a patient for 3 years and my seizure activity has reduced considerably. We have tried numerous medications and I am now taking Lyrica which has been quite successful in controlling my epilepsy. Dr. Stern is always available to consult by phone and prescribe medications when needed.

I am very conflicted about the care that I received by Dr. John Stern twenty years ago. I believe he had good intentions, but I had just suffered a brain injury and the start of my epilepsy as a result of medical negligence from the Air Force while pregnant, had been abused and was in a custody dispute with my abuser. I have questions that I need answered and cannot get them even if I schedule a new patient appointment. I think he definitely knows his field, but in hindsight...I wish he wouldn’t have done what he did to me. There were other ways that he could’ve protected me.
A previous 6 yr patient, I was changing medications that he prescribed, and my seizures started increasing from 1 a day to up to 30. I tried getting ahold of him during this period of time (1 month) and he would not respond with instructions on what to do. I eventually was having so many seizures that I went to the ER and am now at another hospital. His lack of communication makes it impossible to really have faith and trust in a doctor to help you with a serious medical condition like epilepsy.

My sister recently was hospitalized with what appeared to be seizures under the care of John Stern, MD, who has a wonderful reputation as a neurologist. She received a diagnosis of psychogenic non-epileptic seizures and due to the fact that he ruled out epilepsy- she was discharged and told to find a psychologist with expertise in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) with no referral over a weekend with only one contact with Dr. Stern who said very little. She was asked to read Lorna Myers book on the subject, published this year 2014. That was it! NO further consultations within the UCLA system with the expert in CBT who also had a background in neurophysiology, or psychiatrist......bad form. I realize UCLA is a teaching hospital. My husband went there for his residency program, so I am familiar with how the "system works". I don't know Dr. Stern personally and he did make room in his busy schedule to see my sister, as all physicians should............Supervision of residents is key in practice in a university medical center...on this score- he blew it. Now she is home to fend for herself- still having seizure-like episodes, falling, anxious beyond belief , and putting herself back on her medication which was removed for the EEG- and no directions in sight beyond my efforts as her sister who lives in Minnesota............POOR DISCHARGE PLANNING- Shannon Schulz, retired BSN My sister recently was hospitalized with what appeared to be seizures under the care of John Stern, MD, who has a wonderful reputation as a neurologist.
