Dr. John E Croom

After a long line of Drs for a strange episode, Dr Croom laid it all out, answered all my questions and did a thorough exam. I'm not "better" but definitely informed and referred to a Dr that can possibly fix this with Dr Crooms advice. All three Dr's working together have definitely eased my mind and given me hope. I was impressed with his no nonsense demeanor and his accurate answers.

I first saw Dr. Croom about 10 years ago after having 2 grand mal seizures while asleep (witnessed by spouse). Dr. Croom diagnosed me with having 2 different types of seizures. I had been diagnosed 10 years before as having 'panic attacks' but he realized that I had been misdiagnosed. I thought he was full of bull, but he proved me wrong. His treatment has kept me seizure free & no more 'panic attacks.' A few years later I began having other neurological problems & he insisted I have a 3T MRI, which did show lesions in my brain. The MRI's haven't led to a definitive diagnosis yet, but has narrowed it down to 3 probable diseases. Since Dr. Croom only sees patients with epilepsy now, I will probably see another neuro in his group that comes to a nearby hospital for the other neuro issues. I haven't been good about having annual visits as I've been battling cancer & a back injury that prevents me from walking very far or stand for any length of time. It is hard for me to trust doctors, but I do trust Dr. Croom, implicitly. If you are looking for a doctor to 'coddle' you, then Dr. Croom isn't for you. Don't get me wrong, he is polite & answers your questions, but his patients need to remember he isn't there to be our "buddy", he's our epileptologist who also has other patients to see. Would give him ZERO stars. Not just rude but hateful. This man called me a liar and just kept repeating “who sent you here, who sent you here…” as if a person can refer themselves to a specialist without going through insurance and a primary doctor. Apparently he didn’t read the chart and see the THREE referrals from THREE DIFFERENT doctors in three different fields of medicine who ALL came to the same conclusion after FIVE YEARS of testing and retesting and then treating the seizures SUCCESSFULLY with seizure meds when nothing else worked. Great neurologist and been with him for over 15 years. Harvard med graduate definitely knows his stuff! I’m very blessed he’s my doctor so I can work and support my family. Been seizure free for our whole time.

When I was referred to Dr. Croom several months ago, no one really knew what‘s the cause of my suddenly passing out condition. By the time I visited him, I already forgot why I had an appt with him and what’s his specialty, because during the long waiting for his appt, I discovered there has been 2 gas leaks in my apartment and after the gas leaks were fixed, I really haven’t had episode of passing out except an incidental fainting spell which didn’t match seizure symptoms. However, Dr Croom didn’t want to take any chance, he asked many Qs to rule out all possibilities of seizure. Even he determined that I don’t have seizure, he show concerns of my stress level, how badly I was treated by my apt manager & how that can effect my health. He gave me a lot of time & very attentive to every word I said. He tried to trouble shoot with me and gave me many good advices. I Strongly recommend him. He is truly a doctor who cares for his patient. I wish he is my Dr but I don’t have seizure.

Dr. Croom treated me for epilepsy in collaboration with my neurologist at the KCVA. He accurately diagnosed the nature of the type of seizures that were ongoing at the time and even recommended some good treatment for me. Unfortunately, I was transferred to another Epileptologist that the VA hired shortly thereafter, so our time together was short. However, I’m also an LCSW and Dr. Croom has treated some of my clients who have epilepsy as well as clients who have PNES and he has been effective in helping me with both. I now live out of the area and am under the treatment of another epilepsy specialist, but Dr. Croom’s insights helped guide my current treatment.

Dr. Croom has been treating me for several years. He is thorough in diagnostics, which is critical in treating epilepsy. I am very impressed with his patience, support, clear communication and ability to instill confidence in me making decisions about treatment.

I’ve been a patient of Doctor Croom for 10 years. I have epilepsy and was not able to find a doctor that could help me keep my seizures under control. I’ve had 40 years of uncontrolled seizures. You could say that Doctor Croom saved my life, he definitely helped me have a great quality of life. He’s also a great guy, one the most empathetic people I’ve met. Dr Croom is incredibly knowledgeable and kind. He speaks to you as a caring friend and not just another pt. would recommend to all.

I’ve seen dozens of doctors over the years and Dr. Croom is by far the one I’ve been most impressed with. Dr. Croom’s expertise, friendliness and selflessness is what every patient dreams of getting from their doctor. He’s absolutely one of the best and most respected neurologists in the Midwest. Even the doctors at Mayo recommended him. He’s truly a fantastic doctor and he truly cares about each patient. I consider myself lucky to be a patient of his for over a decade now.
