Dr. Joel R Saper

I spent 10 days in MHNI’s head pain clinic and Dr. Saper and Kariyanna almost killed me. They continued to keep giving me medications and sedatives that I was having anaphylactic shock reactions to. They did not even acknowledge my voice or my parents voice. The wanted to keep giving me more facet blocks that were causing me to be extremely swollen and in 10/10 pain the entire time I was there. I then went into MHNI in Ann Arbor for a migraine injection right after my 18th birthday because that’s what the doctors there said would likely help. When I got there they dropped me as a patient and said “If Mayo Clinic can’t help you neither can we.” I went into a crazy reaction because of them when they were supposed to be offering me medical care. The physiologist Dr. Lake just called my parents and said to go to the ER after I threatened to kill myself in their office after they dropped me as a patient and were extremely rude.

I visited Chelsea a little over10 years ago and I had an amazing experience. Dr Saper and his whole team were knowledgeable and understanding. I have and will continue to recommend this clinic to anyone who is having life altering head and neck pain. I am in the process of making contact and finding out if they accept my insurance because I am in a bad state with my migraines at the moment and I should have returned sooner. I’m very excited at the prospect of going back!

Dr. Saper's experience is what I came here for and he did not disappoint. He is kind, a good communicator. I appreciate the ease with my medications were handled. The diagnosis of migraine and cervocogenic headache was arrived at immediately. I appreciate that I received so many treatments for these problems immediately also,

It was so wonderful to start to feel my normal self emerging from this seven month torture chamber. Your staff and knowledge is amazing. Thank you for everything!

Outstanding facility all the way around. I would recommend this hospital to anyone who has debilitating headaches as I do. The entire staff from the doctors, nurses, assistants, room service and housekeeping were top shelf. Everyone I talked to that works here say they love their job and working here. Hard to top that. I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to come here for my headache treatment and am leaving with a new lease on quality of life. Outstanding facility all the way around. Everyone is so nice

I took a whole day off of work and spent a large amount of money to just sit there, watch a video from the 90s, and get my blood pressure taken. They told me I’d be getting evaluated and tests to be taken, but nothing was done. I have tried multiple time to call and email them for a refund but they have not returned any of my communication. I thought it was a great experience overall.

AFTER 40 YEARS of applying Dr. Saper's physical therapy advice, I NO LONGER SUFFER with migraines. I know and recognize signs and symptoms in time to prevent the headache in most cases. The important thing is I don't have to use strong meds. I make a list of foods,etc. that may trigger the nerve.

Everyone has been amazing in the hospital unit. The nurses are incredibly nice and they really listen to you. I can't even express my appreciation for all of the staff and Dr. Saper. This place has literally saved my life. The pain I had before coming here was unbearable and no one was able to help except Dr. Saper. I have been to so many other places and they weren't able to come close to the care here at MHNI. The first time I came to the hospital unit my pain was reduced significantly. The second time has led to even more answers that no one else was able to find. I love that Dr. Saper cares about finding answers and not just masking everything with medications. I feel so fortunate to have been in this program with Dr. Saper and his marvellous team.

I felt very supported with The entire staff. Everyone was very knowledgeable, supportive, and provided me accountability as well as education in helping myself and my treatment plan. I felt like a participator and understanding my diagnosis and possible treatment plans rather than being told what the best strategy should be. While in meetings with my doctors, I felt like they listened to my concerns and took that into Account when setting up my plan and modifying it.

I felt it went very well. Everyone treated me with respect.

Doctor Saper and his staff have been extraordinary, professional and concerned about me and my health.

Everyone was extremely nice and went out of their way to take care of me. It was the best staff ever!

Everything from Dr Saper and the entire staff was extremely professional and well thought out for my best benefit. They tried many new medicines and approaches, moist do which were very successful. I came into the practice averaging a 3-5 headache pain around the clock and am leaving with an average of 0-2. Great progress and kudos to the entire staff, including doctors, nurses and everyone in the hospital! Dr. Saper is outstanding. 30 years ago he resolved my migraines in the first visit. Now 35 years later, I started having headaches again. The clinic welcomed me back, and with medicine and simple procedures resolved my headaches again. The staff is incredibly well educated and extremely empathic. Dr. Saper deserves his reputation as the Number 1 expert in the Country about headaches. He is kind, patient oriented and dedicated. I can recommend him without reservation.

I cannot say enough about Dr. Saper. Every morning he would put a smile on my face as soon as I walked through the doors. Not only was he able to help me medically, he was also able to put me at ease emotionally. I would 10/10 recommend him and his entire staff.

I had only positive experiences with all of the staff while staying in the hospital. The nurses were all extremely helpful and diligent. The doctors answered all of my questions. I truly felt that the people looking after me honestly cared about seeing my health improve.

I have had headaches for 20 years and tried all the options from the physicians I went to. I heard about Dr. Saper from my physician and decided to give it a try. It was the best decision I ever made!! Thank you Dr. Saper and the team at MHNI and Chelsea for turning my life around.

My daughter was the patient. The whole staff of doctors and nurses were exceptional! I would highly recommend this place to any one suffering from headaches!

Dr. Saper was very professional, knowledgeable in the field; even though I was not ale to get all the relief that I hoped/expected. I do feel that I have gain some tools/technichs that I am able to bring back home and implement with the help of team of my NJ doctors.

Every nurse and Doctor was willing to explain why medications were given and for what reasons. Everyone went above my expectations to provide great care. I am leaving with having a better understanding of what could have caused my head pain than when I came in. From the aides to the doctors the staff did everything in there power to make sure I got better.

Dr. Saper refuses to use a digital record system which makes it hard to get information about your condition. He also refuses to participate with Medicare which puts financial hardship on patients many of whom are disabled due to chronic migraines. Communication is very difficult because it is the clinic’s practice to prevent actual contact with doctors over the phone or by email. Definitely wouldn’t recommend this doctor.

Very thorough...pleasant...personable and knowledgeable.

Everything was great.

The staff has been extraordinary in scope and concept. Before every facet of treatment the staff explains the reasons behind, the reasons for and the possible side effects. If you want the medical profession to improve, bottle what these people are doing.

My doctor was able to understand my headaches and explained to me, fully, about what was wrong and what procedure were needed to ratify my pain.

This program is AMAZING! In the short time I have been here, the doctors and nurses have single turned my 4/5 level headaches into 0-2...I can get my life back now! a HUGE thank you to all that have cared for me...I will NEVER forget what you did for me!!!

Doctors and other staff were willing to take time to listen and understand the problems effecting me. They offered a multitude of treatment options until we found some that worked. They provided warm and friendly care while in a professional setting. I appreciated the care and support each staff member provided.

Overall, I have had an excellent experience in the head pain unit. His expertise added a great amount to my already extensive knowleddgebase of the migraine condition. I appreciated his demeanor, empathy, and commitment to his patients' healing.

Dr. Saper is wonderful at explaining why and how he would like to proceed with patient care. He answers all questions clearly and with thoughtfulness. The staff on the pain unit are caring, knowledgable and thoughtful as well, including Ann, Andy, Hollie, Monica, Alex, Cheryl, Sasha and all the other staff who have cared for Lena.

I have a huge respect for Dr. Saper because of his deep intuition about the sources of head pain. He had a sense for what my problem was and was able to give me the treatment that I needed. It almost seemed like he knew from the start what was going on.

Being a part of this experience has been great, and truly beneficial to my health.

The staff is very friendly and informative. I have learned more here in the last 12 days than I have in the past 17 months.

Dr. Saper and the head pain unit staff were extremly helpful and provided excellent care during my stay. I would reccomend this progrsm to anyone with severe treatment resistent headaches.

the doctors and nursing staff have been great. i have found relief through the treatments that they have provided me during my stay. i feel confident in my plan for prevention and look forward to continue working with the staff.

I have never been cared for and comforted by such staff. It made my stay here a lot easier.

Everyone here listens to me as a patient. That is so important. Thank you. Dr. Saper always double checks and makes sure you understand whats going on after the morning meeting.

Dr. Saper is fantastic! He is knowledgable and caring. I love the approach of seeing the entire team of Dr. Saper and staff during morning 'rounds.' The team is always on the same page. And the nurses on the inpatient unit are incredibly kind and considerate when it comes to migraine pain!

Doesn’t participate with Medicare. Over-medicates. Dismisses patients who question their treatment. Wait time is very long.

Dr. Saper was easy to communicate with and knew to focus on my cognitive complaints (aphasia) and not just migraine pain. The treatments seem to be working well and I am happy.
