Reviews for Joel T Cotton
Dr Cotton is literally the worst doctor ever. I’ve never cried so hard at how someone treated me in a clinic. I went in scared of this huge needle for my nerve scan, and he literally came in talking about how much pain I’ll be in and then when I explained I was scared… he cancelled my entire appointment that I waited 3 months for. Like there was no bedside manner , no compassion, it was just a disgusting and sad experience . Dr Cotton is literally the worst doctor ever. Wonderful doctor. With a pleasant personality!
A WASTE OF MY TIME. WAS SENT THERE BY MY CARDIOLOGIST. VISIT LASTED LESS THAN 5 MINUTES, WAS SHORT WITH HIS ANSWERS, DISMISSED MY SEVERAL QUESTIONS, DID NOT ASK ABOUT MY HISTORY NOR DID HE SEEM LIKE HE WANTED TO HEAR IT AFTER I VOICED SEVERAL CONCERNS AND ASKED ABOUT SEVERAL THINGS WE COULD DO TO HELP MY SITUATION. VERY POOR BEDSIDE MANNER!
Joel Cotton does NOT listen to his patients. I found his methods outdated and stale. Total visit was LESS than 15 minutes. He would not even explore other options of treatment for my nerve pain , (which had basically crippled my right leg) and did NOT do any testing at all. I have nerve pain in other parts of my body that he did not even check. Just told me I would have to "live with my pain for the rest of my life" ... there is nothing that could be done. He also did NOT enter my personal information on my record, (I found this out later) which could negatively affect my insurance rating. I did get a second opinion, who gave me encouragement that there was at least an option to dull the nerve pain, along with possible exercises to "possibly" remedy the pain.
Referred to him by my ENT for an abnormal brain MRI. He did assessment within 10 min. Told me i needed more sleep, needed to stop eating so much and was to stress then prescribed a very high dose of muscle relaxers to “help me sleep”.
Saw Dr. Cotton this morning for loss of balance, unintentional weightloss and memory and confusion issues. Asked me to pull up my sleeves and I did...he asked what was on my arms and I told him it was my dogs, he then treated me as if I was a drug addict and told me everything was normal despite having lesions on my brain. I called my PCP and told them what happened. I will never return and I would NOT reccommend him.
I was referred by my ortho to get an EMG for some wrist pain. He never introduced himself. I only found out his name when I saw the report he sent my ortho. He went through the test quickly with almost no explanation. At the end he told me the test was normal and then made a snide remark because I wasn’t magically cured because because he told me I’m healthy.
Helped save my life

Too expensive, did nothing to help me. Bad bedside manner.
ABSOLUTELY the worst doctor I've ever seen. Essentially, is a insurance company shill.
I had to wait for months to get an appointment and never cared for, and he never cared about my condition either, I have prescribed the wrong medication and had to experience five seizures, and he had such a lousy attitude and was very racist, like the reception, and nurses he never once asked me how I was feeling only about where I was born so disrespectful and dehumanizing. Never was I treated with respect I regret ever going to this doctor everyone in this office has a horrible attitude even over the phone. I had to leave the country to receive proper medication and a probable diagnosis for my condition. Please do not go here!! Worst physician I have ever experienced . Interrupts you repetitively during history taking . Belittles you as you explain your symptoms and signs. Fails to perform even the most basic neurological exam properly omitting most of the important clinical evaluation. States he does not have the skill set to do an EMG which is a frank lie since he lists it as a skillset. Will not refer you to one of his office colleagues for the EMG he says he can’t do, & which was the whole reason for the referral by a spinal surgeon. He then abandoned me as a patient which is a violation of the Hippocratic oath. He has no interest in the patient & no interest in accurate history taking or examination. He belittles you, tried to get you to concede with diagnoses signs and symptoms you don’t even have, to fit what he wants to get you out of his office ASAP. Office manager was told of the issue & simply ignored my exoeorence, and the fact I was left abandoned/fired from his office. DO NOT GO TO THIS DOCTOR !
Dr Cotton is the worst physician I have ever encountered. Front the outset he fails to take a proper clinical history. He does not allow you to finish answering questions and interrupts you repeatedly as if he doesnât have time to hear about whatever your clinical problem is, which is why after all you are there. He asks leading questions which is a big no in medicine and takes no time to understand your neurological condition. He formulates conclusions after seeing you for less than a minute and then asked questions to secure the diagnosis he has arrived at in under 60 seconds, and berates you of any of your answers do not fit in with whatever diagnosis he comes up with. All of this is before you even get into the examination room. Once in the exam room he does not perform a thorough neurological evaluation. I had large motor and sensory deficits and severe nerve pain after a major surgery and my surgeon requested a neurologist do a through exam and an EMG. His neuro exam lasted less than 2 minutes and invoked him watching me walk then touching thr side of my thights with his finger, and that was it. Despite having a completely number thigh on one side, he tried to impress on me that I wasnât really having any problems and that it didnât fit with an issue he had ever heard of. He said this many times. When I told him about my motor and sensory deficits and severe radicular pain, as relayed to me by my surgeon, he said âI donât know what that isâ which is a blatant lie meant to confuse the patient so he can take full charge of the history taking and make up his own answers since he doesnât let you finish a sentence. He wonât let you use any medical terminology. It is almost as if he believed a lay person is incapable of understanding medical terminology, even more disrespectful that I am a highly qualified and experienced physician. He went on to say I would need an EMG in 3 weeks, which I then explained would actually be next week. When he heard that he said ok well 8 weeks, and then changed his mind again âok you donât need one at allâ. Really bizarre behaviour. Then he admitted he didnât have the skill set to perform an EMG to look at the area of my exiting spinal nerves involved which is the strangest excuse I have ever heard since his own website lists EMG as a procedure he performs and which he has performed before on my arms. So he was giving a patient the complete run around, being dishonest, interrupting rudely, dismissing symptoms and signs, not willing to refer me to one of his own colleagues in his own office to have the EMG that he says he isnât skilled to perform, and doing the poorest neurological exam I have ever experienced. There was no thorough evaluation of pinprick, light touch, temperature, vibration, or proprioception. He just said âjust count yourself lucky you donât have foot dropâ as if the current neurological deficits and radicular pain are not of any consequence to a human being - they are. When I checked out at the desk to relay my experience and request an emg by another provider in the office, I was told the office manager would call me. When she did she simply protected Dr Cottons behaviour and did not set me up with another provider for proper evaluation and the EMG my spine surgeon referred me for. She then repeatedly transferred me to Dr Cotton each time I called to discuss the medical insurance issue I now had that my referral had been used up with the visit to him and he had not done the test requested on the form, because by his own admission he didnât have the skill set to do it. I tried to explain this to the office manager but she literally cut me off three calls in a row and transferred me directly to Dr Cotton. He simply said let me know where you want your records sent. So he essentially fired a patient and clinically abandoned them for the neurological investigation, care and follow up they needed, for no fault of the patient , but because he just didnât want to see me and that wa

If you use or have used doctor Cotton I highly recommend you get a second opinion.
Dr Cotton is absolutely terrible. Unbelievably rude & talks right over you. Very unknowledgable with new treatments and needs to just retire. Never had such a bad experience at a Healthcare facility! Had I read the reviews beforehand I would of known better. Listen to the reviews!!!
The worst physician I have ever seen, and I have seen a lot. Awful bedside manner and very rude. I would ask him a question and it was like he was yelling at me for being stupid. I was told to see as Neurologist as soon as possible as his first comment was, “I don’t even know why you are here. You already know what is wrong with you”. I would rate him a zero if that was an option. I would never see him again, even if he was the only option. The worst physician I have ever seen, and I have seen a lot. I went in to Dr. Cotton as a referral due to MS like symptoms. He met with me for maybe ten minutes (generous estimation) and did tests on me that had already been completed and stated he was going to order some tests. He did not send the notes from my exam to my primary care physician for almost a month and then billed my insurance company an exorbitant amount. I called his officer with my complaints and they were completely useless. DO NOT GO TO DR COTTON and I am reporting him for medical negligence.
I had a stroke in Dec. 2016, it left me unable to walk without dragging my left leg, and with slurred speech. However after looking at the medication that I am on for my Fibromyalgia Dr. Cotton decided that it was not a stroke but instead that I was depressed. event though had it not been for the TPA shot that I was given in the ER that night I would not be here today.
Agreed save your money. I don't know why I was sent to him. He did reflex exam for MS. MS requires MRI. What a joke. Even told me people who have MS do not experience pain. Wow that took the cake.
What a complete joke of a neurologist. I have never had a doctor leave me a voicemail and tell me, "I don't know" so many times and then not be able to refer me to someone who does know. I have a diagnosis of vestibular migraine, my ENT referred me to him because he couldn't do anything else for me. He evaluated me for five minutes and sent me on my way refusing to change any meds I was on or even schedule a follow-up appointment. Supposedly he doesn't treat vestibular migraine... But weird that all of the members of my support group from all over the United States and the UK -- see a neurologist!!! So it isn't that he doesn't treat it, it's that he doesn't want to. Save your time and money and go see someone else. He is obviously approaching retirement and is just collecting a check and DOESN'T care about his patients in the slightest. If you are looking for somebody who will sugarcoat and has a great bedside manner No you will not find it with him. However he will tell you the straight up truth which is what I needed to hear! He is the third neurologist I saw and the first one to give it to me straight! I was hesitant after reading the reviews but he did spend a good amount of time with me. And he really seemed to know what he was talking about! I honestly would recommend him to somebody!
Rude, uncaring, did not help me at all. Complete waste of time and money, very disappointed. The man should retire as he does not want to help patients. A one star rating is more than he deserves.
He is a JOKE! He should not be practicing any kind of medicine ! He would not listen to me at all! Told me I had a stroke then called 2 min after I left and told me I didn’t have a stroke! Told me I couldn’t have an MRI because I take a blood thinner! He’s a total idiot! I don’t plan on paying his bill either!

This guy told me he didn’t believe I was having brain seizures even after looking at my EEG records showing I was having seizures. He then told me my symptoms were due to teenage stress and that I was hormonal. He put me on a medication that he said would help my seizures if I was truly having any and I was hospitalized because he prescribed me the wrong medication. Rudest doctor I have ever visited and doesn’t know what he’s doing at all.

Did not listen to my symptoms and rushed his appt with me. We was frustrated with me when I wasn't feeling better. I asked him (in tears) why I got migraines that won't go away and he said, "I don't know, but you've had them forever" and left the room.

Was refered to him by work comp doctor. He didnt listen to me and said my headaches would go away in time. Wouldn't refer my EX wife to this guy. I would give this guy a zero if i could.

I would never recommend this man to anyone! He rushed me through my appointment. When I tried to explain what was going on, he would cut me off and acted like he didn't want to hear what I had to say. He did a 10 minute physical exam that was a joke, my doctor did a more complete neurological exam than this guy did. He is a joke! A waste of time and fiances!
I'm not even sure how he has a medical license. Wouldn't peer even for a moment at my medical documents I brought showing medical history and symptoms. Couldn't get a word in edgewise to describe symptoms. Told me my migraines (3 day debilitating, photophobia, vomiting) were tension headaches and I should get on an anti depressant. I'm appalled at my appointment. I cannot believe that just happened. My PCP immediately referred me to a neurosurgeon instead of this joke. Don't go to this office!

Would have to argee with the most other reviews, he did not look at any of medical documentsi sent ahead of time. I have border line high cranial pressure, diagnosed visual issues, headaches 24/7 for 12 years, only time my headaches, sleep apnea, insominia went away was when i had a spinal tap that measured the cranial pressure. crap doctor doesn't listen or care. didnt let me say much at all and most his answers were crap. would not recommend him to anyone unless you wanted to torture them.
crap doctor
My appointment was just awful. I've had so many blood tests done and two MRIs, all through Methodist, and he didn't seem to know anything about them or have any of my records. He wouldn't let me explain my symptoms over the past 2 years, just asked how I was feeling TODAY. So if I had a heart attack a month ago, would it not matter because I wasn't having one TODAY?! Please don't go to him, he will do nothing for you.

Dr. Cotton spent time with me before and after a thorough exam, used common-sense methodology, and did not put me through unnecessary tests. This was a relief given that I've a) already undergone enough and b) have Medicare for insurance. I had to laugh when he lifted my purse and noted that my solution might begin (and end?) there. Suffice it to say, I'll be carrying a lighter load in the foreseeable future. Thanks to Dr. Cotton & his staff, I am now capable of resolving this particular burden.

He was absolutely awful. He did not let me speak one word of what happened to me, did not perform a single test on me, and then got very pushy and cocky, trying to put me on medicine for something I didn't need. I was supposed to see Dr. Franco and I got stuck with this joke of person. Someone revoke his license, he ruined my life. I will never go back to him and beg everyone to never go to him unless you want him to put false information on your medical record.
