Jason Stoneback

I broke my femur which was a bad break and had emergency surgery performed by the on-call doctor at the hospital I was taken to. My leg was not healing, so I was referred to Dr. Stoneback at the University of Colorado. He performed restorative surgery and now, because of him and his wonderful team, my leg is healing. I never thought I would walk again or dance again which is my passion. There are no words strong enough to describe how grateful I am. I am walking and dancing. When I would get frightened about anything, Aimee from his team would give me a call to reassure me all was well. Molly and Maria, another part of team, are also wonderful. I am so grateful and cannot praise D. Stoneback and his team enough!

I heard of Dr Stoneback through a discussion group on FaceBook related to OI (Osseo-Integration) surgery. At this time he had recently started the OI program in Colorado. Dr Stoneback is the third doctor I have seen to be evaluated for OI. All three doctors indicated I was a good candidate for this procedure. I evaluated multiple doctors because I wanted to make sure the OI program the doctors were offering was a good choice for me and to find a doctor I felt comfortable working with. What impressed me the most about the program Dr Stoneback runs is the teamwork that makes this procedure successful. When I went to Colorado for my evaluation I didn’t just meet Dr Stoneback, I met an entire team. I met staffers who work with insurance, I met nurses and physician assistants, physical therapy, prosthetist and the doctor too. The physical therapy program with the other doctors was “you will need physical therapy” with Dr Stoneback and the PT team I knew what PT would involve, the timeframe for milestones were tailored to my specific circumstances as a double amputee. They also had peer visitors come in and meet with me. These peers allowed me to see the end results in a live person I could talk with, not just pictures or videos on the internet. There are some questions that are best answered by another amputee who has “been there, done that”. Because of the Covid-19 lockdown that was in place when I had my surgery we drove to Colorado and stayed for 10 weeks. The last 4 weeks involve daily physical therapy and required staying in Denver for that portion of the program. Dr Stoneback’s program and team focus on this is an active procedure. I don’t just lay on the table and have an operation, I’m an active participant with the team. My questions, comments, feedback, concerns and triumphs were clearly important to the entire team. One phrase that was used often (especially in physical therapy) was “slow is fast”. While everyone wants to get through PT quickly, the team encouraged me to go at the pace they outlined for me and not speed ahead. Having been an amputee for more than 10 years this didn’t fit how I normally do PT. This procedure is such a significant change that I was forced to go slower than I wanted (at the team’s speed) and I know now that this was the best approach for long term success. I honestly couldn’t have gone through PT faster, this was a significant change in my mobility. I don’t regret going slow, it really was the fastest way for me to progress. And the PT program in Denver was a team event among us patients too. We got to see each other progress in PT and we stay in touch even still. PT continued after I returned home and there was communication between the PT team in Colorado and my local physical therapist. Throughout the first year (and after) I continue to send email, photos and videos of my progress to the team. I wish I’d done some more videos from before I had OI for comparison. I have had a few calls over the year from Dr Stoneback himself. Sometimes he would call me directly about a question I emailed, and sometimes it was just to check in with me personally. And it was great to see the team again at the one year mark for my checkup. I don’t regret my decision for OI, it’s a phenomenal improvement in prosthetics. It’s much more comfortable than a socket system and allows me more freedom of movement. And for me, Dr Stoneback’s approach and the team are significant reasons why I feel I had such a successful outcome. I feel he really cared about me and my progress after surgery, I’m not just a statistic for him. I can’t recommend Dr Stoneback and his program strongly enough. I saw Dr. Stoneback for problems with stress fractures on an old healed fracture on my left femur. He ended up stablizing the leg with a rod down through the femur. The leg is now as strong as ever and the surgery well well. I am totally satisfied with the results and would highly recommend Dr. Stoneback.

Dr. Stoneback is a surgical rock star! I went to him for osseointegration surgery, and the results of OI and the medical care I received exceeded my expectations in every way. He is incredibly talented and unyielding in his efforts to provide the best outcome for his patients. Perhaps even more importantly, he is such a kind and caring person — I have never felt more at ease with a physician. I was blown away by the amount of time he personally spent talking with me about my case — before and after my surgery — including an unscheduled follow-up call once I was home. I truly felt he genuinely cared about me as a person and wanted to do everything in his power to improve the quality of my life. As if that’s not enough, the team that surrounds him is equally incredible! They are caring, patient, and always easily accessible. They became like family to me. I can't say enough good about my interactions with Dr Stoneback and team!! We visited in Jan 2021 to discuss osseointegration and immediately decided to move ahead. His team gave us such comfort and information was always presented on every subject about the surgery and recovery etc. They all really care about you as a person, it's not just you as a patient. Fast forward to Aug and I've just wrapped up osseo and a week of recovery with his team. Every time someone from their team entered the room, I just became happier. He's changed my life, for real!! We still have months of recovery before I'll update this again, but I can say without a doubt, if you're considering osseo or any orthopedic surgery, Stoneback is your guy to go with. He cares. He listens hard. He follows up! Dude called me on a SUNDAY just to check in... doctors don't do that! He does! His assistant Maria is so funny and sweet. She seriously will have you smiling all day. Dr. Stoneback, and his team at UC Health are nothing short of terrific. They all make you feel cared for and appreciated as a person first, and a patient second. My correction was a long and slow process. However, there wasn't one visit I felt like I didn't have a voice or wasn't being heard. He is very no nonsense about his treatment plan, and I wouldn't trust anyone but him for the correction on my other leg.

Dr. Stoneback did wonders to the mess of a leg I brought into him. He did a phenomenal job and I feel stronger than ever. His knowledge and expertise was the reason I went to see him, and I'm glad doctors like him exist.

Dr Stoneback and the limb restoration team at UC Health are top notch. I broke my ulna & radius a year prior and my original surgeon said it was "fine." As I resumed my regular activities and physically demanding job as an arborist I had chronic pain and decreasing confidence in the surgery and recovery of my arm. I came to Dr Stoneback because I refused to believe that everything was "fine." After diagnosing my ulna as a non-union, I had a surgery set for 2 weeks later. He deals exclusively with non-unions of extremities and right away I knew that I was in the right place. The surgery was smooth and I was really impressed with all the follow up appointments to be SURE it was healing. Fast forward 10 months: I am in ZERO pain and have 100% confidence in using my arm. I have resumed all my regular sports, activities and have been fully able to return to my job as an arborist. I don't know what I would have done without Dr Stoneback and his great team! Dr. Stoneback and his team are truly phenomenal. I went to several different doctors for consults about my leg, and none of the other doctors I saw seemed to care as much about me as an individual as Dr. Stoneback did. He saw issues with my leg that no previous doctor ever mentioned, and had a great plan to surgically fix these issues. I had so much confidence in him going into surgery, and I was definitely right to have the confidence. My post-op care has also been great, and although I've had a few minor complications, he and his team have been incredibly attentive. I really cannot say enough good things about Dr. Stoneback and the limb restoration team- I feel incredibly grateful that I was referred to him and my leg and well-being are better because of it. Dr. Stoneback did a wonderful job on a mess of a leg I brought to him. His warm and kind demeanor assured the fact I made the right choice in going to see him to help fix my leg. His knowledge and expertise has done wonders for me and for my recovery and I feel stronger than ever. I'm glad doctors like him exist.

I first met Dr. Stoneback last night when he stopped by my room to tell me what my options were going to be moving forward. In hind sight I realize I should have done a lot less talking and more listening, but the doctor was completely attentive and caring. He answered all of my questions and promised to keep the option I desired at the time on the table. After completing more research today I realize how many more positives his option has and I can see that he really is just looking out for what is best for myself and my family. My initial desired option will be very lucrative for Doctor Stoneback. It would also give him an opportunity to perform a career building procedure. He has every reason to try option one, so I have a ton of respect knowing he would happily pass on his personal benefits to do what is best for myself and my family. We had the unfortunate event that landed my husband in the ER with a broken ankle/leg in 3 places plus a dislocation, Dr. Stoneback was the provider on call that day. He was knowledgeable and had great bed side manner. My husband went back in a week later for his surgery and again we had a great experience with Dr. Stoneback. I would highly recommend him! We did not feel the wait time was extensive, as another person noted.

I would not recommend Dr. Stoneback. His bedside manner is terrible and upsetting. He would leave us waiting in the exam room on most visits for over an hour. His work resulted in a second surgery.

Dr Stoneback did an ORIF on my Tibia and I couldn't be happier with the results. He was very professional and I felt 100% confident going into my surgery.
