About Dr. Hans Carl Coester
Reviews for Dr. Hans Carl Coester
Dr. Coester performed a fusion of the L3-4 lumbar this this past week on me. He and his team are spot on, very professional and reassuring. And if it tells you anything in Post-Op, most of the nurses would use Dr. coaster if they had a problem with their back.
I lost my job of 15 years within the same system as Dr. Coester because his office failed to provide paperwork stating I was still under his care and was unable to work. I had repeatedly worked with Dr. Coester and his PA in the OR. I was in a backbrace at the time of my dismissal. I had an L1 compression fracture, and while I'm finally out of the brace, the pain and numbness I've dealt with since the accident continues. I was repeatedly told that it would "resolve itself" and then they weren't sure "where the pain was coming from" but didn't seem concerned with my symptoms at all. Having been cut off from medical insurance, I have to just deal with it. I would not recommend him or his office to my worst enemy. My mom and her husband had three spine surgeries each and my wife is under the knife as we speak. We wouldn’t have ANYONE else do this surgery! Highly qualified! Great conscience and care for his patients.
His staff lead me thru his process, first a visit with MA, then an indepht interview with his PA. Set up appointment with Dr Coester, details of procedures, answers were covered and made, clearly. Scheduled surgery date and at home recovering tonight. Tingling of leg and toes were the first thing I did when in recovery room. No Tingling ?? of toes and leg. I struggled all summer and am glad I had dr Coester for my surgery
I do not believe there is another surgeon in the area they couldâve done a job as well as he did. I surprise injury I got lucky Iâve been back to doing what I want to do thanks to their office!

Horrible staff. Waited and waited and waited for Ericka to call me back for two days despite the calls I made to her so I can try and figure out if surgery or injection would be the best option for me. She was to call me on Thurs at 11 to discuss it. I missed her call because I had to use the bathroom and unfortunately forgot to take my phone. I called back within 30 minutes but was told to just leave her a message and she'd call me back as soon as she was off the phone. Three hours later...still no call. I called back and was assured she will return my call. Nope! Called back today and the receptionist told me that Ericka told her to tell me that she would call me right back when she was off the phone. Fours hours later and it's now 7pm and guess what? NO CALL. Very unprofessional and doesnt care that a patient is in pain. My husband will probably not go see Dr. Coester after this. How can a staff member completely disregard a patient who is suffering from 3 comprised vertebrae and is in EXTREME pain and can barely walk more than 10 minutes? So I dont reccomend this office unless you can wait and wait for a response. Dr. Coester lost my business because if a staff member that didn't care. I wish I didn't even have to give 1 star but I'll give that star to Dr. Coester himself because I know he is a fine surgeon that worked with a group of other surgeons. Horrible staff. I had back surgery in September and everything went great. I have no pain now. Dr. Coester and his staff were great. I would highly recommend Dr. Coester.
I was paralyzed by a rouge beyblade flying at my spinal cord at mach speed. He did a fusion and gave me a second chance at life. It's because of him that I can go out there and let it rip. Thanks, Dr. Coester.
Excellent results from removal of spinal cyst, removal of second re-growth cyst, and a spinal fusion. I walk daily and enjoy my life. Have met other patients who are just as greatful! Without Coester’s expertise, I wouldn’t be alive point blank. What else can one say.... Excellent results from removal of spinal cyst, removal of second re-growth cyst, and a spinal fusion. … More
He operated on my neck recently and has changed my life. After 5 years of arm pain 2 surgeries at OCR, Dr. Coester fixed me. He is extremely knowledgeable, kind, and an excellent surgeon. Thank you Dr. Coester. I knew immediately, when I woke up that the surgery was successful. Highly recommend!!
Dr. Coester did my Cervical surgery last August. He has a great bedside manner and is very professional. I’m completely happy with the results and I’d return to him in a heartbeat!
The outcome of the L4-5, L5-S1 surgery was successful. Excellent actually. Physically therapy was required in order to regain muscle strength and coordination caused by years of pain and decreased mobility prior to surgery. Fast forward 2 years, still no pain, have resumed the sports I enjoy. Daily activities bring joy without pain. With gratitude I give Dr, Coester and his team a flashing TEN.
I am updating a review that I left earlier. The one where I talked about being blown off after failed ACDF surgery. Now, I have very concerning symptoms and extreme weakness in left arm and hand plus incontinence. My MRI showed severe bilateral foraminal narrowing at the disc above where the surgery was and Dr. Coester will not even meet with me to discuss my options. Apparently, in his eyes, I have no options. The fact he won’t even talk with me over 3 years post fusion is horrible. I don’t know if it’s my type of insurance or what, but I would avoid a doctor who abandons his patients when they don’t have good outcomes.
Dr. Coester had to fuse my lower back after I fell down some stairs and had a rupture fracture of my T12 vertebrae. He did excellent work and explained things very well to my wife. I really was not in a position to understand what he was saying at the time due to pain medication. I am three weeks out from surgery and have half the pain I. I am sure the pain will diminish as time goes by. I realize with this type of injury I will have some limitations in the future.

Dr. Coester is amazing! Goes above and beyond for his patients. His staff on the other hand are rude!
After Dr Coester did surgery on my husband, he could not walk, had no bowel or bladder control and will be self cathing for the rest of his life. After 4 years, he still has little to no feeling from the waist down. As Dr Coester said, “I’m sure he will walk again”. 4 years later, he now can use a cane but has limited balance. If there were a -10 on this scale, I would give it for Coester. Stay away from him!

Scheduled my first appointment with this office on 8/14/17. Then MRI on 8/22/17 due to the wait time with insurance. Had the MRI and waited for results. Called the office several times and the Doctor was out. If my pain was that bad, I was told to go to ER. Finally got results week after (mid-week). Next steps were to schedule an injection & physical therapy. It is now 9/5/17 no injection scheduled and starting PT on my own. Their communication is awful. Looking to switch to new provider.
Surgery on L3-L4 vertebra to relieve pain in thighs and hips. Truly professional analysis. Came out of surgery and no pain in affected areas. Wow, didn't know it could be this good. Slept like a log.
Having never posted a poor review on anything, this is honestly one of the worst doctors and staff I have ever dealt with in my lifetime in my community. Terrible post-surgery follow up and communication as well as lack of compassion and care. Decided that an hour drive to Denver is much more worth the value. Would highly recommend you check your resources before using this office and staff.
Just a small note: I was within 1-2 weeks from becoming Tetraplegia, also known as quadriplegia, is a paralysis caused by illness or injury that results in the partial or total loss of use of all four limbs and torso; paraplegia is similar but does not affect the arms. The loss is usually sensory and motor, which means that both sensation and control are lost. Can't say how this Dr is because he refused to see me. Scheduled a appointment mid last month informed them about my past medical history asked if I needed a referral or anything else was told no. I mailed in my MRI and never got any paperwork from them as stated in would. So after driving 4 plus hrs 1 way checking in filling out paperwork and waiting 30 mins in a rm his assistant came in and stated that the Dr was refusing to see me because I had had a surgery in the past 12 months. I told her I had told them that when I made the appointment and was told it wasn't a problem and that my past Dr had told me to seek out a different dr as he could not longer help me. I got a very blunt well that's not our problem it's policy and that I shouldn't of ever been able to make the appointment in the first place and that I needed to look elsewhere where as they won't even give me a referral. I'm sorry this isn't how someone with a chronic problem should be treated and if your staff doesn't know what your office policy is then you need different staff. UC health can take a flying leap for all I can I've had some bad drs in the past but this is right there with the worst of them Can't say how this Dr is because he refused to see me. the Communication between the staff is horrible. Dr Coester's PA is unable to make a decision so we have to wait to here from the Dr, which according to the office manager, can take 7-10 days. When we call to speak with the PA, someone else calls back. Can't say we had a good experience there.
The finest Neurosurgeon in Colorado, the West, and possibly the country. Well known and respected. If my child needed the expertise of a neurosurgeon I wouldn't hesitate to call Dr Coester.
I am a high level dressage horse trainer and clinician. I've had a few injuries and I'm now in my late 50s. I first met Dr. Coester at PVH in 1999. I had broken my neck. He had located an old unstable fracture that I had tried to get doctors to take seriously for years. Instead of rushing me to surgery he stabilized both fractures and I was back in the saddle. A couple years later I had developed sciatica, from a fall I had suffered while riding a very green horse. My bad was a mess, with fractures, stenosis, bulged disks etc. He preformed a fusion and completely fixed my back pain. I was back in the saddle in a week with no pain. That must have been in 2003 or so. A few years later I had ripped some muscles in my back. He said there was nothing he could do for that, but he recommended removing the hardware from the surgery, explaining that the hardware itself can cause discomfort. He again was right. The pain reduced markedly after the hardware was removed. Now in 2016 I again have three bulged discs and a fracture. The only part of my back that is sound and pain free is the lower lumbar where Dr. Coester did his magic. Today I find out what he wants to do with my back. I trust him completely! Why wouldn't I? Dr. Coester is also a good person. Nurses like working with him. He's a true dog lover. He spend time doing habitat for humanity projects and gives to charities he believes in. He is not surgery happy, bt is honest and cares for his patients. I am a high level dressage horse trainer and clinician. I've had a few injuries and I'm now in my late 50s. The quality of care displayed by this "physician" is pitiful. He is apparently too important and busy to call his patients with diagnosis. I was informed of a failed fusion, instability of my neck and need additional surgery by his nurse, while I was standing in an airport. I should have been told he reviewed my scan and an appt was needed. I also discovered I had a nodule on my thyroid by reading my CT Scan report on the patient portal. The news was devastating to me. Highly dissatisfied!!

I received a single level cervical fusion after a long period of cervical radiculopathy. I am 3 months in and my pain is not better. The surgery had no complications and the x Ray looks good. I am very concerned about several aspects of my care: one is post surgery recovery guidelines are inconsistent and unhelpful, they don't want to hear that a surgery didn't work to resolve treatment and are not helpful, and finally, they are just decidedly inconsistentl(not enough characters to elaborate)
