Gordon I Groh

I recently had my reverse shoulder replacement on December 27th, 2022. Dr. Groh and his staff have been excellent during pre-op, surgery and post-op. I can't say enough about them, Asheville Orthopedic Associates and Mission Hospital. This was my third joint replacement surgery in as many years, right hip, knee and now shoulder. My recovery has been excellent in all three cases. Thank you all, especially Dr. Ghoh and Dr. Smith.

Had an amazing experience with Dr. Groh and his team. From pre-op to post op my experience was top notch! The care and compassion Dr. Groh and team showed impressed me! I would recommend his practice to my friends and family without hesitation.

I broke my clavicle and tore a ligament. Dr. Groh did a great job repairing my injury. I really like him and think he has a great bedside manner. My husband also had a shoulder replacement by Dr. Groh and his experience was superb. We wouldn't go to anyone else!

Horrible. Dr Groh may be a technically competent doctor but his manner is nothing short of offensive. As long as you just sit there and don’t ask him any questions I guess he could control himself and be cordial but if you have any concerns or need clarification he is insufferable. My husband and I have been to him multiple times so this is not a “he was having a bad day” situation. There are plenty of other good doctors here that don’t treat their patients that way.

A wonderful experience with Dr. Groh. He replaced my shoulder and it is amazing how much better I feel. After the initial MRI Dr. Groh called me himself; not an assistant or nurse but Dr. Groh personally. He also called me personally after surgery to see how I was doing. I was amazed that he did that himself rather than delegating it to someone. Rehab was a breeze; they bring you in once every couple of weeks and if you DO YOUR EXERCISES progress will be swift. Gordon will call you a liar and refuse to do a SHOULDER surgery due to weight issues. Even though his colleagues will do a knee surgery on the same patient. Would not recommend him even for veterinary surgeries.

Dr. Groh has been great. I injured my hand badly last year, and my OT had mentioned that it wouldn't hurt to ask if anything more could be done to help improve things. After setting up an appointment and meeting with Dr. Groh he suggested another procedure (DIP Fusion). Throughout the entire process, he has been kind, patient, and informative. He's kept me in the loop with what was going on before, during, and after surgery; He showed me my x rays, giving me a better understanding of it all which I appreciated. I never felt I couldn't ask any questions. I'm definitely the sort that gets nervous and quick to forget what I want to ask (even the smallest questions) more so when I feel rushed but I never felt that with Dr. G. Dr. Groh is excellent. I broke my humerus bone in my right arm. He did surgery and put a titanium rod. He explained every detail. He was kind, compassionate and caring during my entire possess. He gave me post OP exercises so very helpful. Thank you Dr. Groh for taking care of me.

I had shoulder replacement surgery on Dec 5th 2019. I consulted Dr. Groh a few months before. He reviewed my xrays with me and recommended the surgery. It was not a difficult decision as there wasn't any separation in the joint on the xray and my range of motion was very limited. The surgery and post op went textbook. Dr Groh and his PA were super. Dr. Groh did a great job putting my shoulder back together. Equally excellent, he--and his PA Erich--looked after me in post-op visits, when they gave me very helpful physical therapy exercises. If I keep remembering to do them, my shoulder/arm will be good as new or close. I liked him, also, because he called me "boss."

Dr Groh is excellent. He gave me full explanation of procedure being used for rotator cuff repair pre-surgery, and gave clear instruction and expectations at every follow up visit. He surrounds himself with competent and professional staff. I highly recommend Dr. Groh.

Dr was very rude and argument. Never answered my questions directly and just didn’t seem like he had time or cared to fix my problem. Do not go for congenital problems( something your born with) cause he has no interest in helping you.

Dr Groh first saw me about five years ago for what I thought was shoulder pain. He referred me to a neuro surgeon who alternately cured my pain with cervical fusion. Two years later I returned with pain in the other shoulder that turned out to be a bone spur. He removed it leaving me without pain. He advised me I had a lot of arthritis in that shoulder which came to bear a year later. I was able to delay shoulder replacement for two years through his care. Ultimately, in Dec 2019 Dr. Groh replaced my shoulder. After six months of rehab under his guidance, I am now playing golf. Amazing no pain. He is truly a gifted surgeon. His bedside manner is awful. He doesn’t explain things very well and is always rushed and doesn’t take the time to explain things to you. He did my surgery a year ago and my thumb is still not healed. He also forgot that I had 2 pins in my thumb and failed to tell me that. I was told I only had 1. I am on my third opinion. I think something is wrong because I am still in pain and I can’t use my thumb properly. His bedside manner is awful. Dr GROH fixed my wrist. The office and surgery center were amazingly efficient and organized. Dr GROH is well documented as being the cream of the crop in his specialty and this was apparent in all of my interactions with him. All expectations were exceeded.

Dr. Groh has been my Go to Doc. For shoulder and wrist surgeries he is cool and easy going...he doesn't BS YOU when it comes to surgery. He tells you what you need and does it !! Dr. Groh is great. My dad had multiple surgeries with him. I broke my collarbone on a Thursday night and saw him the next day. He decided that I needed surgery and he ended up scheduling me 2 hours later that day, due to him knowing I would not want to wait the entire weekend. He is fast, kind and professional. I remember his nurse at Asheville Orthopedic jokingly saying that they call him the "plastic surgeon" of scars, man was she right, my scar is nothing compared to some other I have seen. Dr. Groh repaired my torn rotator cuff. I am about 7 months post surgery and my results have been great. Range of motion is good and strength is building every day. I will definitely use him if I need another procedure.

He did a very good job on me and my husband shoulders. I talk to other people about Dr. Gordon Groh about how good a Dr. he is.

Dr. Groh corrected my carpal tunnel and trigger fingers on each wrist and hand during one surgery. I didn’t have any problems and actually didn’t experience any pain during a couple weeks of recovery. Dr. Groh did a great job at fixing several problems at once, I am well pleased with the results.

I fell on black ice in the winter of 2018, an incident that completely destroyed my right rotator cuff. The first surgeon wanted to do a complete reverse shoulder replacement within 48 hours. When I saw Dr. Groh the following day, he said I had a 70% chance of avoiding surgery with physical therapy. He was absolutely correct. I am virtually 100% back to normal, but must continue the therapy exercises for life (I'm now 77). I remember well his final words at my checkup after PT: "If you go out that door and turn left, you'll see the exit. You're entirely too healthy to be hanging around a place like this." His willingness to suggest PT before surgery was reassuring. As they say in the oenology world -- Highly Recommended

Went to Dr Groh over a issue with my left wrist. He "diagnosed" me without taking any x-rays or anything. I told him I wanted to get a 2nd opinion---which I did---and the diagnosis was completely different from what Dr Groh told me. Was also informed that if Dr Groh would have done the surgery on what he THOUGHT was wrong, it wouldn't have helped my problem at all. I will never use this doctor again or recommend him to anyone! He has the bedside manner of a rattlesnake. He is the most arrogant, egotistical, narsasistic, self absorbed doctor I have ever had the displeasure of meeting. He put me through 6 months of torture due to a terrible shoulder situation. He ordered an MRI on my shoulder and told me I needed a total shoulder replacement. He kept putting me off so long I sought treatment from a superior shoulder surgeon in Hendersonville Nc. She looked at the same MRI and immediately saw that I had a very rare and persistent bacteria in there from a rotator cuff surgery before Dr Groh. It took two surgeries to take care of it but she did such a great job I didn't have to have a total replacement after all. I did have to go through 8 weeks of antibiotic infusions 24/7 to make sure the bacteria was gone. There's no telling what would have been the results if I had stayed in the "care" of Dr Groh! From first to final visit, Dr. Groh and his staff did an excellent job helping me through a broke arm that required surgery. I hope to never have to visit him again, but if something else gets out of whack, he'll be my first call.

I was diagnosed with a rotator cuff problem and by following the PT and other recommendations was soon back to my normal pain-free routine. Dr. Groh knows what he is doing and while I hope I don't need to see him again, it is good to know he's there just in case!

Dr. Groh did a fantastic surgery on my fractured wrist which required a plate and 12 screws. I have no distortion to my wrist or hand and a VERY minimal scar. HIs PA, Eric is a fine asset. They make a great team.

I had a reverse shoulder replacement and everything went very well. I have very little pain and the exercises Dr. Groh gave me for rehab were exactly what I needed and my shoulder healed beautifully, I didn't have to pay for rehab which was great. I would recommend him to anyone who needs shoulder surgery.

Dr. Groh has been amazing. He took the time to really listen and, for the first time in over a year, I felt truly cared for. He was warm and friendly, as was his entire staff at Asheville Orthopaedic and the Orthopaedic Surgery Center of Asheville. I’m 8 days out from surgery and already feel no radiating arm pain that has been making daily tasks so difficult. Dr. Groh performed an instability surgery on my right shoulder and I am more than happy with the results. My shoulder no longer hurts, I can return to work full force. He definitely knows what he's doing and what he's talking about. He listened to my worries and answered all my questions. I would recommend him to anyone who needs help. Great experience with Dr Groh and his staff. Very assuring, professional, and to the point. Went the extra mile to get me setup with another Dr for a different problem I have. Unheard of by most. Billing department awesome. I have zero complaints from this man who also served our country proudly. He did procedures on my aunt and mom with same results.

I am 75 and recently had shoulder replacement surgery with Dr. Groh. I was very pleased with his professional competence and his warm, personable manner. After my surgery, I expected I would need physical therapy. Dr. Groh informed me that the research has shown if a patient followed through on the prescribed exercise regimen at home, it would not be necessary to spend the time and money going to PT. He was absolutely right! I have recovered well following his advice with no need for PT.

I had a broken bone in my right arm that had been broken by cancer 24 years ago. At the time of my treatment for cancer, a rod was put into my arm to stabilize it while it healed, but it never did. Eventually, the pins holding the rod in place broke and I was in excruciating pain. Dr. Groh did a bone graft on the arm, fixed a rotator cuff tear, and after 24 years of non-union, my right arm is finally healed and I can use it normally again! Dr. Groh is wonderful, and I'll be grateful forever.

I had a shoulder replacement in Feb 2018. EVERYTHING he told me to expect was spot on--even when he told me the recovery would not be near as painful or take as long as rotator cuff surgery. He was right! I found him to be compassionate and caring. Great "bedside manner." I was very pleased with the wait time in his office (or lack thereof). Loved his staff, especially Eric, his PA. The whole group is very professional yet personal, from the receptionists to the nurses. Highly recommend him.

Dr. Groh is great! I would not want anyone else replacing my shoulders. He is very thorough and makes sure to answer all your questions. He is professional, courteous and kind. When I thought i would have to go to a different doctor because of a change in insurance, he personally went to the insurance people in his office to make sure he was on my insurance. Everyone in his office is professional and efficient. The wait time is almost always very reasonable. They do have emergencies!

After fracturing my wrist, I was referred to hand specialist Dr. Groh. I was able to make an appt. quickly and surgery soon followed . Throughout the entire experience ,Dr. Groh and his PA Eric Walker were extremely professional and explained things very clearly. Six weeks after surgery ,I was able to begin OT and six weeks later, I now have improved function/use of my hand. I was looking for advice concerning an old shoulder injury and the possibility of reverse replacement. Unfortunately, the damage to my shoulder doesn't lend itself to a successful surgical repair, but Dr. Groh could not have been more honest and compassionate as he communicated the disappointing news. He was not rushed and spent a great deal of time explaining his evaluation. I have every confidence that he gave me all of the information that led to his final conclusion. I trust his judgement

On Tuesday, December 26, 2018, Dr. Groh performed a complete shoulder replacement on my right arm. After returning from the recovery room, the pain was gone. I required no pain medication at all after the surgery. There was no bruising in the area at all. I wore a sling for the next 2 months, began my home therapy and today, April 11, 2018, I was released from the doctors care. I had an excellent experience with Dr. Groh when I broke a bone in my hand this winter. Dr. Groh and his PA Eric provided great care, answered all my questions and I could not be happier with the results of my surgery. The Arden location was easy to get in and out of and all the staff from the front desk, to the nurses and radiology were fast and friendly. I never waited more than 10 minutes for anything. I highly recommend Dr. Groh and his team.

I had shoulder replacement surgery the last of November 2018. Dr. Groh and Eric have excellent communication skills and know there business. The surgery and recovery went well and there followup was very good. My recovery from surgery has progressed better than expepted and I am happy with the results. The only hiccup was the scheduling he day of surgery where I was suppose to be in surgery around 4 PM but didn't happen until after 7 PM. My wife had a call at 5 PM that I was out of surgery?

Best experience ever. Total rotator cuff rebuild. Minimal pain for two days then no pain whatsoever. Complete recovery without physical therapy. Just followed Doctor's orders. After all the horror stories I heard about other surgeons I will admit that I was scared but turns out my fears were unfounded. If you have any type of shoulder problems and are willing to follow orders, Dr Groh is the only sensible choice.

I tore my rotator cuff lifting 95lb dumbbells. I work in the medical field and believe me, I did my research. I decided on Dr. Groh and glad I did. He repaired my shoulder in July and I'm doing great. If you need shoulder surgery, he is the man! If I had to do it over, I would definately choose Dr. Groh again. Just tell him Mark sent you.

Dr. Groh performed rotator cuff repair surgery on my shoulder in October 2016. He, his P.A. and his nurse at Asheville Orthopedic Assocs. described the procedure in detail at the pre-surgery consult. The day of the surgery went very smoothly. Dr. Groh kept my wife apprised of the surgery and my recovery. He prescribed shoulder-strengthening exercises for me to accomplish at home, without having to participate in outside physical therapy. My recovery has been great! Highly recommended!
