Our 23 year old son was born with a rare genetic disorder and developmental delays. When he began to suffer from an abundance of seizures early on, my husband and I immediately sought the help of doctors at Columbia Presbyterian. Hence, we are extremely fortunate that Dr. Akman has meticulously managed our son’s condition for the past 15 years. Her knowledge and expertise in the field of pediatric neurology is unmatched. She has provided the highest quality medical care, along with an enormous amount of compassion and empathy for our son, as well as for our family. We are so grateful for the progress he has made thus far and for his happy, seizure free existence today. Dr. Akman’s kindness, consideration and emotional support continue to aid us through a most difficult journey. During our routine visits she always takes the time to explain things, address our concerns, and offer practical advice. Furthermore, Dr. Akman is always pleasant, respectful, and exudes warmth caring and understanding. We are incredibly blessed to have her in our lives. In 2010, our daughter became suddenly and severely ill. Over the span of three weeks, she was hospitalized three times and examined by four different neurologists – and we had no answers. Fortunately, we met with the late and great, Dr. Arnold Gold, who insisted we meet with Dr. Cigdem Akman from the Columbia Neurology team. Once in the care of Dr. Akman and the Columbia Neurology team, we quickly learned our daughter had a very rare, serious and debilitating type of encephalitis that required aggressive treatment and surgery. Dr. Akman is an exceptional pediatric neurologist. She is extremely knowledgeable and has tremendous experience. In addition, she is an authentic, warm and compassionate person. She has always been open and honest with us – which is extremely important when you have a seriously ill child. In 2011, our daughter spent about 5 months in New York-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital – with most stays lasting 2-3 weeks. I can’t say enough about the care she (and I) received while there. The nursing staff was phenomenal. They provided excellent medical and emotional support. Spending that much time in a hospital is demotivating and sad. The staff did their best to lift our spirits by providing strong child and parent support programs and being kind and empathic. I am happy to share that our daughter is now a healthy, happy and normal teenager (well, maybe better than normal). People that meet her today have no idea what she has experienced and endured. We continue to meet with Dr. Akman and the Columbia Neurology team for annual follow ups and testing. We are so grateful and thankful that we met Dr. Akman. Dr. Akman is a Incredible and kind person. My brother got severely ill and he went to coma for over 1 year. When I emailed Dr. Akman she answered and started to follow up with him. Doctor Akman is an intelligent and caring woman. She diagnosed my condition and constructed a plan of action in a quick yet reasonable time. Looking back over the past five years, she always had my best interest and she truly loves to help people. She is inspirational. She also works with an unbelievably talented in addition to compassionate team: from neuropsychology, the surgeons, nurse practitioners, to the coordinators.
