I will be forever grateful to Dr. Carl and Patricia for providing the superior medical care that has changed my life! There really are no words to describe just how thankful our family is for Dr Childress and his wife Patricia. Our 8 year old daughter has been in glasses since 18 months old for alternating intermittent exotropia, astigmatism, and nearsightedness. We saw two different ophthalmologist over the years and never felt right with either treatment plans. When our daughter began to struggle immensely in school with reading, writing, comprehension and numerous other things, it was heart breaking as a parent to see this. When our daughter was diagnosed with dyslexia and yet interventions were not helping we knew we needed to look further to find answers. When we found Dr. Childress our lives but most importantly our daughters life was changed for ever. He gave us answers and information we in the years of this struggle had never heard of. It was not until her 9th or so session of vision therapy did we see the changes in our daughter that we had so longed been praying for. To see your child now excelling in school when before it was a nightmare for her is truly priceless. Dr. Carl and Patricia Childress completely changed our family's lives and we cannot thank them enough for enabling our son to be his true wonderful self and succeed! We gladly drove 90 minutes each way to each appointment for Dr. Carl's superior expertise, in-office tools/therapies, and training for at-home daily strategies, which we implemented with hard work and great success over time. Our son had birth trauma and we always felt something was wrong. However, he would go to traditional medical doctors for checkups and we were always told he, including his eyesight, was fine. A mother's instinct though told me something was wrong as I noticed various things. At around nearly 2 years old, he was evaluated and found to be on autistic spectrum exhibiting most all markers of sensory processing disorder. We did occupational therapy for a year and overcame some things, but most I was told they could not help. As I read up on SPD to do as much as I could from therapeutic and holistic/natural perspectives, I discovered in one book that they advised having the child checked for vision issues (while I am thankful for that book mentioning vision, it also recommended doing things for SPD that were very wrong such as NOT encouraging eye contact, which is the exact opposite of what we needed to be doing). We found Dr. Carl's vision therapy information as the closest to us that specialized in autistic spectrum also. It was also a huge blessing to find out his mother had pioneered a lot of tools and strategies that other vision therapists were not doing. The first evaluation confirmed a host of vision problems that our son had that were responsible for most of his "behavior" and "autistic" issues. The first session was a lot of tears and hard work, but when we got back to the car and all got in, for the FIRST time in I couldn't even tell you, my son looked me in the eye, held my gaze for several seconds, and said, "I love you, Mama." I felt as though I was seeing my son for the first time without all the vision and neurological issues blocking his ability to be who God created him to be. As I said, I cannot thank God and Dr. Carl/Patricia enough for what they've taught us. Don't expect to take your child there, drop him/her off, and have Dr. Carl work some "magic." Parents/caregivers need to learn and be involved. They need to implement things every day. It takes time and hard work. But if you do that and invest in your child's success and future, you WILL climb the mountain and see the progress. You may, as we did, plateau for a while, but if you stay consistent, you will climb the final mountain and change your child's quality of life, independence, and success more than words can ever describe.
