Reviews for Dr. Caple A Spence
I have been suffer from lumbar spinal issues since 2010. I was a 21 year old kid when I was suffering from my lumbar issues and prior to I was a soldier in the military and athletic young man. I had my first lumbar surgery in 2011 performed by a local Oklahoma neurosurgeon. It was a rough recovery and gained some relief for 4-5 years after recovering for 1-2 years. Being a patient of the VA you don’t get many options nor choices of doctors (especially 10 years ago). I finally discovered the Vet Choice program (2015)/Community Care Program (2018) and I started researching specialist of the spine. Eventually I gave up working the through the ways of the VA. Fast forward 2020, I was determined to get my spinal issues resolved and I went through 2 neurosurgeons, 2 neurologists, and 1 Orthopedic-surgeon spinal specialist before I found the top rated Neurosurgeon Dr. Caple Spence, MD! I am beyond grateful for the entire staff! Dr. Spence made me cry my first appointment because he was the first specialist to listen to what I was suffering from all these years and I felt he believed me (unlike others). He created a plan of action that fit my life, he had multiple tests ran, had specific imaging done, and he educated me by showing me why this hurts/what could be causing my issues. Dr. Spence saved and changed my life for the better! I am forever appreciative for Dr. Spence and the staff that helped make this possible. I don’t think I could tell him “Thank You” enough for what he has done for me! There’s a reason he’s the top rated neurosurgeon in the state of Oklahoma! He IS that talented! Thank you, Sir! But thank you for giving me my life back I feel 20 years younger my pain is pretty much all gone just a little bit I have from healing I just want to say thank you again so much Dr Spence ????????
Dr. Spence is by far the best doctor I've been to, and that says a lot! In fact, he is actually preforming a surgical procedure on me Thursday. He will not leave the room until all of your (and your family kids and all frankly) questions have been answered. Trust me when I tell you, you will not find a better neurosurgeon in the state and quite possibly the region! Dr. Spence is by far the best doctor I've been to, and that says a lot! In 2011, I was referred to Dr. Spence by an orthopedic specialist to correct a Spondylolysis in my lower spine. He replaced two discs and installed a cage consisting of 6 screws to support the spine while my body grew a new bone. Having surgery performed by Dr. Spence was the best medical decision I have ever made. Dr. Spence and his staff were all professional and I was treated respectfully. His work on my back was life-changing. I have not suffered a bulging disc since that surgery. I'm thankful for his steady hands and careful attention.
Overweight patients should not go to this Doctor. I came in for a consultation on my back which needed surgery. He decided to talk about my weight the whole appointment. I have PCOS and have been over200 lbs since age 12. If my back wasn't broken, I could exercise more. And my weight isn't my issue, it was my crushed L5S1 disc and my pelvis out of alignment. He had no compassion.
An ER doctor at Oklahoma Heart Hospital referred my 83 year old mother to Dr Spence after she fell and received an L1 compression fracture. Dr Spence performed an L1 Kyphoplasty which did not relieve her pain at all. Then he sent her to a pain management doctor for an injection which also did not relieve her pain. After a third visit, Dr Spence basically told her she would have to learn how to deal with the pain and manage it because of her osteoporosis. His office manager is not efficient. On two different occasions I have had to follow up with her because referrals were not received. Our experience has been very frustrating. Wish I would have trusted my gut instinct from reading poor reviews and not wasted our time.
my appt was 9:30 am. Take off the entire day cuz I had to wait hours to c doctor just for a consultation . Very disappointed
This surgeon is top-notch! He fixed my loved one’s neck! He has great bedside manner, along with his nurse, Heather. Can’t say enough about this highly skilled surgeon.
My experience with Doctor Spence was fantastic. I had been in chronic pain due to herniated discs in my neck for approximately 15 years. I had previously used cortisone injections for relief, but it got to the point that they no longer worked. The wait can be long to see him, but it is well worth it as he will spend a lot of time with you to explain everything and answer all your questions. I ultimately had ACDF surgery in April of 2019 for C5-C7 and I couldn't be happier! I have my life back thanks to Dr. Spence. During my follow-up and subsequent strength testing, Dr. Spence was as excited as I to see how well I had progressed and was recovering. He truly cares and is an amazing surgeon, he has my highest recommendation. My experience with Doctor Spence was fantastic. Dr Spence is an amazing Doctor. My wife had been suffering with a debilitating condition for over 5 years. We visited 4 "Specialists" and each time was a new diagnosis and treatment program. Finally, we were referred by my wife's orthopedic Doctor to Dr. Spence. He immediately set up a new scan, thoroughly looked over her records and got the back story. After all the scans, he was very up front with us about how severe her problem was and what he would be able to do for her. He took his time explaining the pros and cons of the proposed surgery, how intense it would be and what our expectations should be. We decided to do the surgery and it was an intense 2 day procedure. Just a note, he was the first Doctor to see her in the recovery room, not the attending, not the shift leader, Dr. Spence was the first. Her recovery was long and difficult but we followed all his advice and my wife has a new lease on life now. He is empathetic, caring, honest and will not sugar coat anything but he will not let a patient drift off into what I call the "Miracle Realm", he put it into terms that we understood going in to this. After her surgery, he came to my waiting room and explained in detail how the surgery went and what I could expect over the coming weeks. I have never had this positive of a reaction to any Medical professional in my 54 years. If you want a cookie cutter Doctor, that will simply placate your feelings and sate your desire to feel better, go elsewhere. If you want the truth and the time it takes to make your life better, go to Doctor Spence. P.S. We don't mind waiting to see him during appointments specifically because he takes his time. He has done 3 surgeries on me. All have gone well. I would recommend him...even if you have to wait several hours to see him...he is that good. Heck...I would pitch a tent and wait...he is that good!
He did surgery on me and messed up my back. He couldn't tighten a screw so he left it, saying he would have to do another surgery to repair it. There was no way I was letting him touch me again. I had to go to another doctor to fix what he did. I'm in extreme pain every day thanks to his carelessness. I don't recommend him. Find another doctor.
My husband had a 9:30 appt this morning (they open at 9:00), was told to come a half-hour early, which we did. The half-hour was completely unnecessary due to all we did was hand them my husband's papers. Oh well. His assistant was very nice when she took my husband and myself back, but then we waited another 1 hr and 10 mins past his appointment time and nobody even came to say why there was a delay. We could hear the doctor in the next room laughing, joking and talking to another patient. My husband finally went to inquire about the delay and only then did the doctor come into our room. When I mentioned we had been waiting a long time, the doctor did not apologize, but instead said he "takes his time". When we told him politely that it had been 1 hr and 10 mins past our appt time, he then told us "I am not McDonald's" and "I take my time, there is only one of me". Again, he did not apologize, and when we objected to his disrespect in telling us he wasn't McDonald's, he stood there and said if we weren't happy, "now would be the time to leave". So we did. We are in our 50's, both professionals, my husband is retired military, and that this guy would be so completely disrespectful and arrogant to us was utterly inexcusable. By the way, we are fully capable of telling the difference between McDonald's and a doctor's office. We will never use him again. He's not the only game in town. Talk about a God complex! How hard would a simple apology have been?!? My husband had a 9:30 appt this morning (they open at 9:00), was told to come a half-hour early, which we did. Dr. Spence is outstanding. Compassionate and caring. He is part of my husbands 'Dream Team. " Very very thankful for him.
I had a lower lumbar spinal fusion with instrumentation in December of 2012 by Dr. Spence and if not for him I would have been paralyzed and in a wheelchair for the rest of my life. Thanks Dr. Spence for giving the details of of the operation and making me feel at ease before the surgery.
I had car wreck in 05 and broke my t12.I was in the hospital in California for a couple months recovering but they did nothing for my back except let it heal. It healed at a severe angle and I've lived with the pain. I moved here 4 yrs ago and was out fishing and fell reinjuring my back, this is where Dr. Spence steps in. I was referred to Dr Spence by my primary care. Long story short he performed an 8 1/2 hour surgery that put my spine back in place. He is very to the point and knows what he is doing and will explain everything he is going to do. I would definitely recommend Dr Spence for anything to do with neurosurgery. In December 2016 I went to see if Dr. Spence could put implants in my back to short-circuit my nerves to stop my pain in my legs, he said he could not do that, but that he could repair my back and do away with my pain. I asked him how he could when 5 other neuro surgeons said it couldn’t be fixed. He showed me what he purposed to do looking at my MRI and I believed him. Two weeks later on 22 December he operated on me and I went home Christmas Eve without my usual pain. He rebuilt my back from L3 to S1. And I am still without that pain here over 2 years later. Dr. Caple Spence is one of a kind! He actually cares He fixed my back 16 years ago. I was sad to see him leave the Iowa area. No doubt in my mind though that he is a Huge Asset to wherever he goes. Stan Lee - missed this super hero but I did not. I suffered from extreme back associated pain for over a decade, until that is met Dr. Spence. He ended up performing a triple level spinal fusion on my back with anterior and posterior fixation. I have never felt better. Thank you Doctor Spence.
I would give Dr. Spence 10 stars if I could. He gave my wife's life back to her. She can walk without pain. So thankful that God gave us people with his talent. Thank you Dr. Spence.
I really liked that he was confident in what needed to be be done. His office was great at getting the paperwork done and pushed through, they didn't drag their feet on getting the job done. I had my back surgery a year ago now and am so happy and doing so much better than I was before! Dr. Spence is amazing and I will admit that his personality in the office is a bit tough but the day of surgery he was very compassionate and took the time to talk with me and calm me before the major surgery! The nurse practitioner is also very good. The first time I went to the office, I had to wait a long time, but I spent quite a bit of time with him and the nurse practitioner and everything was explained in detail. My post op visits went fairly quickly without the long waits. The office staff is okay. Teresa was very helpful, but to be honest I found the others to be hard to work with and not very nice. So I guess to sum it up, if you are looking for an amazing surgeon, than this is the place to go. If you are looking for a lot of hand holding and friendly service it might be a lot tougher for you. So it is all in what you are looking for. I can honestly say that I am very pleased with my surgery a year out and mine was quite extensive. Dr. Spence & his surgical team gave me life back! I had been in severe chronic back, leg & hip pain for awhile. I knew there was something/someone that could help. I was right! At the first visit, I felt confidence I was at the right place. Dr. Spence felt very confident he could help. He did not disappoint! I can literally say I have ZERO pain! His nurse Heather is AWESOME! She answered every question I had pre and post op. I wholeheartedly would recommend anyone to contact him.
It is a great thing when someone extremely talented and caring practices in a field as important as this. I can’t recommend him highly enough!

Dr. Spence recently performed surgery on my back and I am currently healing from it. I will admit I was a little scared about getting back surgery, but after he explained what I had nearly three times I began to calm down a little inside. I had the feeling that he knew his job and he was very good at it. At first I thought of him rude, but soon after I realized that he was just very too the point on everything. He doesn't sugar coat it and in a way I appreciated that. I did have a few ill instructions from his secretary that were solved by the hospital themselves. I'm just glad the hospital called the day before my surgery to clarify things, because I might have not been able to have surgery. After the surgery he came to talk to my family and he answered all of their questions and listened to their concerns. My family loved him! I had been struggling with leg pain for quite some time and when I was able to walk for the first time without any pain or limping I cried tears of joy( I seriously cried!) I went to Dr. Spence as a referral from the Air Force. I waited 1 1/2 hrs.for my scheduled appointment, I finally had 5 minutes with Dr. Spence. He dismissed my problems/pains as arthritic and normal degeneration (I was 47 years old). Dr. Spence spent less than a minute viewing the MRI and when I received a copy of his report to my Primary Care Manager, there was erroneous information and claims in his physical exam which were never done! Don't waste your time here. I actually needed surgery

Dr. Spence was very patient, and informative in answering questions, helping and allowing us time to make the decision for surgery. Once scheduled, and surgery was completed he and his surgery nurse called checking to see how my husband was doing and if we needed anything. The office staff was very friendly, his office was easy to get to, they were helpful in scheduling follow up appointments. We were completely satisfied with the surgery and do not hesitate to recommend Dr. Spence to others.

Dr. Spence is professional, he listens to understand the problems that you are having. I came to Dr. Spence with numbness in my arm when I would turn my head in a certain direction. Dr. Spence had me to have an MRI to show what was happening. Steps were taken to relieve the problem, and now, everything is normal. I highly recommend Dr. Spence, he will help you.

Poor people skills very arrogant, condescending. Not good experience would not recommend him. He may be a good surgeon and I don't know what his problem was the day I saw him. But the difference between him and the neurologist I saw today as different as night and day.
