Dr. Bruce E Mathern

Dr.Matherns did a spinal fusion on me 3 years ago and ,it was extremely painful but after a month I was going so much better ,now I need him again and I couldn't be in better hands, he also did my sister's spinal fusion after a horrible doctor messed her up. She was very happy with him. We trust him with our life. Thank you Dr.Matherns. your the best.

Dr. Mathern and his staff are the best. He has helped my family more than once and is the most intelligent person I know. He is extremely attentive and thorough, just exceptional care.

Dr. Mathern operated on me in 2009 after I was in a terrible accident. I was 17 at the time. No other surgeon in the Virginia area was willing to touch my neck injury because the likelyhood of a good outcome was so low. I was facing life in a wheelchair or possibly death at such a young age, luckily I was referred to Mathern. He fused my C1&C2 vertebrae and I came out of surgery with minor restricted movement in my neck. Not only is he a magnificent surgeon but he was also very honest with me about everything and he had no problem answering any questions that I had. My follow up visits with him were probably frustration due to the fact that I was terrified of anything and everything, but Dr.Mathern always had words of encouragement for me and helped me to realize that I could live life just like every other person. He also did my aunts Chiari Malformation surgery, she had suffered for years with migraines and nerve pain. Now she’s experiencing much happier days and gets to enjoy watching her kids grow up. The absolute WORST SURGEON you could ever choose!!! He ruined my life and my families life!!! I’m disabled forever because of his incompetence! I’m not the only one. He and his hospital do a great job covering up all their malpractice!!! If you like your quilting if life stay far away from Dr. Bruce Mathern the family killer!!!

I just want to say it been 20 years now i had my back surgery and i live a very happy life and work every day and it thanks to mr bruce mathern who did my back surgery thank you so much for you done for me and my family your the best thank you so much

I have had three highly successful surgeries by Dr. Mathern over the past 10 years. Each required a phenomenal amount of informed decision making and absolute precision in the operating room. In each case, he made absolutely the right call on how much tumor to remove to cause the least amount of nerve damage. I have recovered fully from each and credit his extraordinary skills for these positive outcomes. His beside manner is also terrific - he really cares about his patients and does everything in his power to ensure a good result. Dr. Mathern operated on me twice the last number of years. He was exceptional and the results were phenomenal. I also love the way he spends an amazing amount of time with you in your visits. He explains the issues in an honest and forthright fashion. A great note is that he is loathe to operate too quickly unlike many Orthopedic Surgeons. One of the finest Dr.'s on the East Coast. Dr. Mathern performed an emergency craniectomy on an immediate family member after a serious automobile accident. Dr. Mathern quickly diagnosed the problem and operated within hours and provided excellent care. Dr. Mathern's exceptional skills saved my family member's life, and gave us hope. The follow up appointment and additional surgery three months later performed by Dr. Mathern at VCU Health were handled in a professional manner. If I ever need a neurosurgeon I would call Dr. Mathern.

Dr. Mathern is the best of the best when it comes to neurosurgery and that's the bottom line. I live in Chesapeake and traveled 2 hours to come to him because I was so unimpressed with the alleged "best neurosurgeons" in Hampton Roads. If something is wrong with your spine, he is the man to see. I wouldn't trust anyone else. I am 41 and had two herniated discs in my neck that literally just starting causing pain out of nowhere. I had no idea anything was even wrong. I woke up with severe neuropathic pain that NEVER stopped. I couldn't sleep, I was in the most pain I could ever possibly experience and not one type of medication would even touch it. Gabapentin and such did not work at all for me and actually gave me side effects of suicidal thoughts when I was already at the lowest point I have ever been in. Nothing, not even the strongest narcotic can touch nerve pain. After seeing local neurosurgeons in this area (757) and very unhappy with their responses as they acted as if it wasn't that bad and said insurance won't do anything so soon, I was recommended to Dr. Mathern by two of the attorneys I work for whose wives had both had successful back procedures by him. They had also researched high and low to find the best of the best so I immediately went to see him. I was originally scheduled to have the surgery 6 weeks from the time I saw him, but thank the good Lord above, he had a cancellation and I was able to get in the following week. Dr. Mathern does not usually recommend using cervical collars because it takes an additional 6 weeks to recover from wearing one. I had my cervical discectomy and fusion at C5-7 on April 20th and felt immediate relief of the nerve pain when I woke up from the surgery. My head felt about 300 lbs for about 3 days after the surgery from not having the support of a collar, but that was it. Day 4 I started feeling great and by day 5 I had really good range of motion. By day 10, I had nearly FULL range of motion. I was back to work in just 4 weeks. I just went for my 6 week check up yesterday and I am cleared to go back to the gym (starting slowly of course), but I am already feeling 100% back to normal. I never in a million years would have thought I would heal this quickly after major surgery on my spine. This man has it down to a science and it WORKS! He really is the best! I HIGHLY recommend him and I will gladly drive 2 hours back and forth if anything were to come up spine related again! I saw Dr. Mathern for a second opinion regarding my ruptured cervical disc at C6-7. It was severe, causing spinal cord compression, and he recommended surgery. However, he only recommended anterior cervical discectomy with fusion. I was only interested in an artificial disc replacement and he had a number of reasons why this was a bad choice. Well, a little over one year out and now my adjacent disc following ACDF has ruptured. Wish I had talked to someone else who would have done a replacement.

Mathern fused L3-L5 supposedly to relieve back & right foot pain caused by accidents.After 12 yrs. of followup for low-dose pain med he drops me with no referral to pain management &,as of 7/13/17,has not sent operation & followup records to doctor I hope works with me better than his phony 12 yr. compassionate manner turn ugly.Also lied about his license,which I can prove,being in jeopardy!

During my consult with Dr. Mathern he was cold, rude and disconnected. Would never allow him to perform surgery on me.
