I was suffering chronic back pain for 5 years after being hit by a car as a pedestrian in the cross walk before I saw Dr. Chiodo. I went to him for a second opinion after half a dozen rounds of physical therapy, muscle injections, and being told the pain was "half in my head" by the rehabilitation doctor previously treating me. He not only finally diagnosed that this was a joint issue, but gave me relief for the first time in 5 years with injections in that specific joint. In addition to being pain free for the first time in years, better yet, I felt listened to and believed by him about my pain. His bedside manner is gentle and kind. I had to leave a review when I saw negative reviews, because he truly is phenomenal. It does indeed take months to get in to see him, but that's because he's in demand (as any wonderful doctor would be). If I could give less than one star to this provider, I would. He does NOT communicate with the patient. He makes his own decisions about patient and does not involve the patient in the decision making process. He put information in my medical record that was not accurate and when I disputed the information through official channels (which took FOREVER), he denied my request to amend my medical record. Very intelligent but does not communicate to the patient. It takes MONTHS to book an appointment with him just to go over the exact same thing you discussed at the last appointment. He will not return phone calls or emails. If you get one consider yourself lucky

I have read the six reviews that precede this one of mine, and I had to double check to see if we are all reviewing the same person. I have just started seeing Tony Chiodo for stenosis of the lower back and so far it has been an outstanding experience from all angles. The first time I met Dr. Chiodo was back in October 2018 and it went extremely well. Dr. Chiodo was very professional but not distant, he was a very good listener paying close attention to all of my input, and very thoughtful in giving me his initial reaction to what was going on in my lower back. In fact, our initial meeting was extremely productive due to a chance CT scan recently done for a kidney stone I had. The plan that Dr. Chiodo laid out for my situation made imminently good sense as I have at a minimum a posture issue revealed by the CT scan for my kidney stone. So step one was physical therapy to straighten out my posture and that has proved to be spot on. The therapy sessions along with the exercises I now do on my own have resolved more than half the issues I had with my lower back which brought me to Dr. Chiodo in the first place. I will have my second visit with Tony in about a month and I am curious to see where we go from here given the marked improvement in my condition. THIS IS A FOLLOW-UP REVIEW TO MY FIRST REVIEW I just had my second visit with Dr. Chiodo and it went as well as the first: 5 stars out of 5. Again, I find him to be a very good listener, highly professional and polite, and has developed a game plan for dealing with my spinal stenosis that is paying dividends. While I wish he has a magic wand that he can wave over me and make me as healthy as I was at 21 YO, that's not gonna happen. But I am getting progressively better to the point that people cannot tell I even have spinal stenosis based on how well I am coping. One Happy Camper here! In this age of immediate gratification that is being demanded by US society (not to mention the current entitlement mentality for participation trophies that some have), keep in mind that there still are parts of the human anatomy that are beyond difficult to repair if the need arises. The back is one of them. Deal with it. If you have a back issue (which I have), keep in mind that it is the medical equivalent of unraveling a Gordian knot. You are not going to get a fix with the same speed as ordering french fries through a McDonald's drive through. A more grown-up and patient attitude will go a long way to a successful resolution to your back issue. I've been seeing Dr. Chiodo for several years for injections in my neck and think he's wonderful. He listens to me, dicscusses my treatment and options in a way that is clear and takes time to answer any question. I highly recommend him.

Do your research. I agree with the disapproval comments. It was so frustrating and I felt hopeless. My life was in his hands living in debilitating pain. He wouldn't respond to his staff calling him, would't refill my narcs he hooked me on, I painfully drove in a snowstorm early AM and waited 4 hours. His staff finally told me I have to reschedule because he was in court on a lawsuit. A waist of years. Don't risk your wellness.

Same as everyone else here, he did not fix my problem and was completely non-responsive to me.

I saw Dr Chiodo in May of 2015 after waiting 5 1/2 months for an appointment. He was totally not there for me when it came to the horrid pain that I was having. None of the injections worked. He had a real nice side to him but he was absolutely horrid to me on one of my visits. He was worse than an upset child. I searched him out because he was a Full Professor and if memory serves me correctly the head of the department. I saw Dr Chiodo in May of 2015 after waiting 5 1/2 months for an appointment. Dr. Chiodo has proven to be completely inept and negligent. I came to him as a referral from another doctor and he gave me much hope of helping me in a swift manner. He wound up completely dropping the ball so that I did not hear back to the point where I had to file a grievance. He responded that he had referred me to a department i had already seen. This set me back as I have to wait even longer now to get help. I have seen similar poor reviews elsewhere.

Very bad experience with Dr.Chiodo. He is almost impossible to reach in regards to treatment options leaving his patient in limbo as well as pain and discomfort.

Dr. Chiodo was a great help and comfort to me while I was rehabbing from a spinal core injury. I was very grateful for his care and compassion.

I had a terrible back injury, herniating one disk in my neck and 7 in my mid spine. It took a while, but after several minimally-invasive procedures I'm as good as new! I don't think that people understand the complexity of back injuries and just want a quick fix or pill to make it all better. Dr. Chiodo figures out the root of the problem and then uses the most minimally-invasive approach to eliminate it. I've recommended him to many others.

Dr. Chiodo is very knowledgable and I trust him very much. He is very busy but has always made time for me when I need it. In fact the spine program at U of M is a great, comprehensive program for head, neck, and back pain/issues. They build a great team for you, and if you have chronic pain, you know how important a team is. Dr. Chiodo is kind and caring as well which I very much appreciate. The whole spine program is busy, as its so great, but its worth the patience.

I've had 3 appt.s with Dr. Chiodo after a car accident. He gave me one cortisone shot which did nothing. He does NOT respond to patients at all and simply DOES NOT CARE! Terrible experience!!! All he had to do was call in a Physical Therapy order and I've been waiting over a month - ridiculous! He'd be fired if he worked a normal job.

A year ago I herniated a disc in my lower back, and was referred to Dr. Chiodo. I herniated another disc which left me unable to work. He set me up with a neurologist, a pain injection, and agreed to fill out and fax my FMLA paperwork. He sent in the paperwork incomplete and I was unable to get ahold of him for a month. After dozens of calls, emails and leaving him another set of blank forms I've gotten some of it done. I need him to verify my condition but again no response. I may loose my job.

I accompanied my husband to an appointment with Dr. Chiodo in follow-up to an ER visit for severe back pain. Dr. Chiodo misdiagnosed my husband's acute vertebral compression fracture as sacroiliac joint dysfunction despite having an MRI in front of him that showed the fracture. The fracture was caused by cancer, which was not diagnosed until 6 months later. The consequences for my husband of Chiodo's misdiagnosis have been grave. I highly do not recommend this doctor. He is unprofessional and does not prioritize the care of his patients. It takes many emails and phone calls for him to eventually update you on results of tests/images/evaluations ect. I had high expectations when I met with him, but unfortunately he did not come close to meeting them. When you have terrible back pain like I do, you want a doctor who will be able to treat you and show concern. This is not Dr.Chiodo. I strongly warn you against seeing this doctor, it is a complete waste of time. Good luck. I highly do not recommend this doctor.
