What a great experience for a not so great a situation. Dr. Bharat saw the CAT scan that identified a small nodule with stage one cancer. Even though low level, he convinced me that waiting for the removal for any length of time was not the best choice I could make. He carefully listened to all our questions and then gave his reasons for moving ahead ASAP. From the observation to his non invasive procedure was 9 days later. His procedure was his lung surgery discovery that allowed my operation to take place with less than a 5% loss of lung capacity while still being able to biopsy other areas of the lung to make sure that's all that was needed. There was no pain with the procedure and I was release from the hospital feeling saved by an amazing Thoracic surgeon. What a great experience for a not so great a situation. I have never smoked and still developed lung cancer. Dr. Bharat was so patient explaining all my options and calming me down when I saw him in his clinic. He and his team worked around my schedule as I needed to bring my mom from California to stay with me for surgery. I had this scary image of lung surgery but I was surprised how painless his procedure was. Dr Bharat took my cancer out with such tiny incisions that I can’t even see. His bedside manners were exemplary. Despite being one of the busiest surgeons and the chief surgeon he made me feel like I was his only patient. I just had my 3 month scan and am cancer free. Came to him from Georgia for a third opinion after not getting satisfactory answers from two other big academic institutions and decided to go with him. Could not have been happier with my surgery and outcome.

My clinic visit with the doc was reassuring. Surgery for the cancer went smoothly and I was home in less than 24 hours. His lung sparing minimally invasive techniques are unique and gave me complete cancer cure and spared my lung function. Came to him for a second opinion and very happy I did. The community hospital in the north was offering to take my whole lobe out and Dr. Bharat did a lung conserving operation using three microscopic incisions and I was out of hospital in less than 24 hours. I am now cancer free and don't feel like I ever had a major lung surgery. Absolutely worth the long trip to downtown and dealing with the traffic. The most incredible, skilled, Brilliant and passionate surgeon I have ever met

This doctor who is supposedly the Director of Lung Transplant at Northwestern hospital in Chicago, IL performed a lung transplant surgery on my family member in 2017. My family member remained in the ICU unit post surgery for almost 6 months. This doctor had no explanation and the patient’s complications kept getting severe day by day. Eventually the patient went into a coma and started getting seizures which again this doctor or his team had no explanation for. According to Dr Ankit Bharat, the patient sustained severe brain cell damage while in the state of coma. Patient eventually came out of the coma but was unable to speak or respond to commands nor move any part of his body. Eventually the patient passed away while on the ventilator. The lung transplant is not a joke and my suggestion after all this experience is to do your research as Northwestern is not the place to trust for this type of surgery especially not Dr Ankit Bharat. This doctor made every effort to avoid having a family discussion regarding the patient’s progress and when cornered had very little to say or just won’t comment at all. Celebrating my fourth year anniversary after a successful treatment for Stage III lung cancer. Couldn’t have asked for a better doctor.

I travelled to Dr. Ankit Bharat for a complex medical condition that could not be handled in my country. I’m all treated now and back home. Exceptional surgeon.

Great doctor, great team. Two thumbs up !!! Genuinely cares and has great bedside manners. Saw me everyday after my surgery, sometimes even after 11 pm and having performed several surgeries.

I received a double lung transplant by Dr. Bharat. Due to the complexity of my case, I was refused by two of big centers in the country. I am 37 with two young children and finally went to Northwestern. The team lead by Dr. Bharat advocated for my case recognizing the complexity but also realizing that they could treat me. I underwent a successful double lung transplant by them two year ago. Unfortunately, I developed a complication which is common after lung transplant and affects over 50% of the recipients called primary graft dysfunction. Dr. Bharat' team not only got me through that but his research team find the cause of this complication which has been affecting lung transplant recipients since the inception of the field. They are currently developing preventative strategies for this condition. I am very fortunate to have been treated by them but also to have contributed to a potential cure for a common complication in lung transplant recipients. I am so thankful that I found Dr. Bharat through the Indian community network in Chicago. Dr Bharat is an incredible human being and a technically gifted chest surgeon. If you need someone who can think outside the box and come up with creative solutions, you need to go to him. He is known to take on some of the most difficult and challenging cases that have been deemed untreatable at other centers and he gets them through. Even in such complex situations he is always trying to push the boundaries. Not only does an incredible job with the technical aspects of surgery, he runs a team of scientists which find solutions to problems that his patients are experiencing to treat them. He has saved my life twice now, first when I was treated by him for a complex lung cancer invading my heart which was considered unresectable at other centers and then when I developed new esophageal cancer 3 years later. Bharat is a magician. I had a rare tumor in the main airway of my left lung. I was told at major centers including Memorial Sloan Kettering and Cleveland clinic that it cannot be removed without taking the whole left lung out. Bharat, however, performed an elegant reconstruction of the airway of the lung after removing the tumor and preserved my whole left lung. My pulmonologist did a bronchoscopy last week for cancer surveillance. He said that he can't even tell that I had such a complex reconstruction done on my airway since everything looked completely natural. I was operated by a thoracic surgeon at another center and they did what is called a major thoracotomy to remove a tumor of my thymus glad. Unfortunately, they left a lot of it behind. Hence, despite getting my chest cracked open, I didn't get the benefits. I was luckily directed to Dr. Bharat by a friend of mine who happens to be a patient of his. Since Dr. Bharat is usually quite busy, the clinic wait times were occasionally slightly longer than expected but it was completely worth it. I never felt rushed during any of my appontments. I am a primary care physician and Bharat had done excellent surgeries on three of my patients with lung cancer. I unfortunately was diagnosed with a condition called hypersensitivity pneumonitis leading to end-stage lung disease and needed a lung transplant. I chose to go to Bharat’s team and my lung transplant evaluation was completed in less than 3 weeks and I got transplanted within 3 days of listing and was out of the hospital in 9 days after double lung transplant. Me and my son were terrified when we first got news of Stage III lung cancer. Meeting Dr. Bharat and his gentle and kind mannerism really helped us overcome our fears. He coordinated all the care and performed my surgery flawlessly. Exceptional care by him and his team of medical oncologists and radiation doctors. They are innovative and created treatment plans for me that would work best for me rather than use a general cookbook approach. Dr. Ankit Bharat performed surgery to remove a cancer of my thymus glad using the robot and the recovery was incredible. He made three incisions on my side less than the size of my finger tips and did the whole procedure through that. I was able to go home the same day and was on the treadmill the next day. I had taken medical opinion from two other surgeons and was told that this surgery was not possible without cracking my breast bone open. I am fortunate to have found Dr Bharat. He is extremely skilled at what he does, his team loves him and is equally passionate about their patients and above all he is humble and extremely kind. He is charming and has a calming aura around him. He very thoroughly explained my options in a manner I could understand and immediately gained my trust. I could tell he is an expert surgeon and felt very safe with him. Dr Bharat removed a complex 18cm cancer of the thymus gland invading the major blood vessels of the heart from my mother. Thanks to him, she celebrated her 42nd anniversary. I was in tears during the last clinic visit when we found out she was cancer free at 2 years. Dr Bharat personally went to get me a glass of water. What a great surgeon and a good human being.

Day by day the patient’s complications got worse and this doctor who is supposedly the Director of the Lung Transplant had no answers. Eventually the patient went Into a coma and never made it out resulting in his death. All I can say is please do your research first before committing to the lung transplant program at NM.
